Despite a silly, vacuous, insipid voodoo set-up, the imagination of its concept, effectiveness of its kills, and freshness of its inner-city apartment complex setting make up for its flaws – a new slasher franchise that’s anything but child’s play. 6/10.

Plot Synopsis: Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky — which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy’s baby sitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he’s institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll’s intentions, before Andy becomes Chucky’s next victim.

Pros: Great character design in Chucky and idea of children’s most sacred toys becoming instruments of horror and slashing, started a big possessed doll craze in horror movies, good gradual transition of scares as we start to suspect something is wrong with Chucky, good slasher scenes especially the fist one (should have revealed him when she turns around though), great tension-building keeping the oll mostly hidden and fast when he attacks so you don’t know what is going to happen, crazy reveal scvene when the mother learns he’s real, the upside down car scene an intricate and cool slasher scene, Chucky scary because of decisions to make him fast and smart,
Cons: The idea of transferring a guy’s conciousness to the doll a little too much of a silly addition, acting is a little subpar overall, bad set design and setting of a dim and small apartment, how stupid can the mom be to buy a peddled doll in a back-alley that mysteriously won’t sell and not suspect that something’s wrong with it, the characters are so stupid for getting into dangerous situations and not believing something is wrong and just giving back the doll after some pretty convincing evidence something is wrong, poor animatronics when Chucky talks, the magic angle just does not work – it would’ve been better to have it as a mystery or something HOW CAN MULTIPLE GROWN ADULTS NOT TAKE DOWN A LITTLE DOLL?!?!, why would the mother not just hit the heart to make sure he’s dead, LIKE THE MAN SAID – ending the whole franchise – the mother is stupid, final fight is literally laughably stupid and overblown nonsense.
