Everybody Hates Chris (2003)

From its funky doo-wop opening theme to gospel ritualized ending notes on eps, EHC is a perfectly-cast [led by a career-role and all-time-great child performance by Tyler J. Williams], nostalgic homage to The Wonder Years and refreshingly-simple/lowkey semi-autobiographical origin story of a world famous comedian diversiiform in race, class, and pure coming-of-age themes. 8.2/10.

Plot Synopsis: Set in Brooklyn, NY in the 1980’s, Everybody Hates Chris chronicles famous comedian Chris Rock’s childhood and teenage years. Surrounded by eccentric family members like cheap father Julius, intimidating mother Rochelle, spoiled sister Tonya, and perfect younger brother Drew, the show is based on the real life of Chris Rock – who serves as the narrator for the show and executive producer.
