Overall, Raised By Wolves is one of the best sci-fi TV series of the 21st-century. The most prolific and legendary monarch of the genre: Alien/Blade Runner-creator Ridley Scott is back with a new cinematic architecture for the streaming age that packs every bit of the visceral, bloodcurdling, epically-ambitious tenacity of his mythical filmography. The cinematography is jaw-dropping and one of the most avant-garde, primordially-fascinating, and beautifully-photographed canvases I’ve ever witnessed – breathtaking world-building taking our early-ancestral veldt and snow/desert-mountain flora-and-fauna of Cape Town, Africa & twisting the landscape into a despotic authoritarian monocracy of brutal animadversion on faith. The complex religious allegory and palpable themes are everpresent in this iconographical-exposition of Biblical-Christianity – from its opening Adam & Eve to the Jesus-parallelization of Campion, progressively-darkening into a nightmare canvas still packing brilliant discourse on the positives, science-paradoxes, and blindside-vulnerabilities of belief and agnosticism. The characterization is human and tangible: a mother protective of her pack of cubs, but haywire A.I.-commentary on the most tension and stakes-filled demographic: telling kids she’s raising stories of the three little pigs while socializing them to her rule – all while being the wolf she speaks of herself. The horror is positively bone-chilling in a new sadistic tarpaulin of violence/necromancy Scott reaches into his iconic bag-of-tricks to splatter blood onto: the next big franchise-potential mixing The Thing, Greek Mythology, Ex Machina, Leone-western brutality, & Star Wars in one of the most bonkers, epic-scale, and original TV series ever brought to the streaming age. There’s parenthood themes, betrayal, cruelty-of-fate, dystopian politics, powerful machinations, Metropolis-cityscapes, Darwinian-ferocity authentic to the brutal animalism of its eponymy, and even intimate heartfelt moments – oh and a career-performance by Amanda Collin. One of the most epic-scale projects I’ve ever seen on TV and a new sci-fi dystopian vision from Alien/Blade Runner-architect Ridley Scott, RBW is a wickedly-original cinematic evolution of the Netflix age – with beautiful cinematography and world-building, terrorization, esoterica, despotism, mythology, and complex religious allegory.
