Super Mario 64 (1996)

A masterclass in 3D world design with sweeping charismatic melodies, ahead-of-its-time textures, and classic arcade Mario feel reinvented on impossible N64 scale. THE All-Time definitive platformer & one of the greatest video games ever. 10/10.

Plot Synopsis: Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform video game for the Nintendo 64 and the first in the Super Mario series to feature three-dimensional gameplay. As Mario, the player explores Princess Peach’s castle and must rescue her from Bowser.

Pros: Probably the mist groundbreaking free roamer in video game history, an absolutely iconic and one of if not the greatest soundtrack in a game- fits and captures the spirit and feel of each different and vastly diverse level, mario with more depth and cinematic grandeur like you’ve never seen him before in three dimensions, crisp controls and textures, winding story that’s cinematic and has depth and mystery too, rich thrilling gameplay with loads to do from classic mario coins and goopasmashing to new challenges brought on by the breathtaking addition of 3d, gets to the boss battles right away and they’re INCREDiBLE and very challenging like Big Bob-omb and Whomp the stone block, jaw-dropping world design with intricate and inventively different ideas ranging from castles in the sky to mountains overlooking the sea to underwater – a masterclass and even by today’s advanced technology they don’t make em like this anymore, great currency system needing the stars to unlock further points but being able to so them in any order you want and putting the player in control-brilliant! and makes you want to keep playing not forced or bored like many other free roamers, the most beautiful and intricate 3d world ever made should be classes taught on this, obliterates every other platformer from the era and the millions that followed it, a quantum leap in video game history to three-dimensional gameplay
