Tropic Thunder (2008)

A hilarious satire of war movies and actors’ egos, but with some unbearably cringy humor like RDJ’s Blackface and Jackie, Tropic Thunder is a mixed bag. 7.2/10.

When pampered movie stars set out to Southeast Asia for the biggest, most-expensive war movie ever made, not a lot gets done as the actors care more about self-image than art. However, when the frustrated director decides to get his movie no matter what and drops the crew into a real war area where they must survive in real life in the jungle.

*Most Memorable Moment*

Pros: Hilarious and unique opening with commercials of fake awful-looking movies of the main actors, hilarious story/idea of self-absorbed actors who have to experience real-life when their movie gets too real, stacked comedic cast in Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Brandon T. Jackson, etc., hilarious spoof of every war movie and their flaws, sharp satire of war movies and actors’ egos, RDJ does an admittedly good acting job as black Lazarus – even though the blackface is too cringy to overlook, good acting overall, surprisingly good direction by Ben Stiller who is normally on the actor side instead of director, strong opening and final acts, exhilarating action scenes like Ben Stiller’s final bridge scene, good ending

Cons: Robert Downey Jr.’s blackface still EXTREMELY cringy and borderline ruins the movie honestly, super gory with to so much destruction, some humor WAY too far and borderline cruel like Ben Stiller playing a mentally ill kid and drinking from the blown off head of the director – if you laugh at that “humor” you’re a seriously dark and twisted person, way too long with a bad middle act and 30+ min that should’ve been cut out

Overall Rating: 7.2/10
